The Pont des Arts is Paris's first metallic bridge, built between 1802 and 1804 by engineers Louis-Alexandre de Cessart and Jacques Dillon. During the summertime, this bridge is famous for its picnics by students, artists and lovers. Over the years, a tradition of putting locks on the chain linked fence developed. This lock symbolizes the love between 2 people. Lovers from all over the world come here to "lock" their love, then throw the key into the Seine, the symbol of eternal and undying love.
Its all so cliché mais très romantique!! J'adore..

on a little sidenote: this tradition began in Italy in 2006. after a movie "ho voglia di te" (I want You) showed the main characters using a chain and a lock in front of a monument in Rome basically "locking their love" for eternity.
ReplyDeleteTeenagers started doing it all over Rome, and later in the rest of the country. In Florence now they have chains around Ponte Vecchio with the locks, and every other week the police comes clear them up from the current locks to have more space for new locks. Kinda nice but kinda defeats the whole purpose.
the city of Paris have done that too, (not because of space but because "it didn't look good")... but lovers kept coming back to put them back!
